Golf Carts & Traffic Laws
Typically, you’ll see golf carts on a course, at the beach, or on a gravel pathway. However, in some jurisdictions, you can drive your golf cart on paved roads. This is particularly true in residential areas. You do have to ensure that your golf cart is street-legal first, and it’s also important to know about the rules that apply to you when operating your golf cart on paved roads.
Follow the Rules of the Road
You have to drive your golf cart responsibly on public streets and thoroughfares, which means following the same rules and regulations that car and truck drivers do. Use your turn signals to alert other drivers to your maneuvers and always watch the road around you before you change lanes or turn. When it’s dark or conditions are poor, you’ll also need to turn on your headlights for safety.
Speed Restrictions
Most golf carts are not typically capable of going more than 20 to 25 miles per hour once you’ve equipped them with powerful gas engines. This means that you’re not going to be able to operate your golf cart on highways, interstates, or roads with much higher speed limits. Make sure that you’re also being mindful of the traffic around you, which may be going faster than you.
